Asparagus and Pea Appetizers

We're having a large dinner party this Saturday, so I tested a new appetizer recipe today. I prepared the filling for the appetizers with green peas and asparagus. To ensure that the filling would spread easily, I also added eggplant pulp and a bit of Pecorino cheese. 

To save time, instead of placing puff pastry dough into molds and following the curve of the molds, I cut pastry rounds. Once baked and flaky, I divided them in half crosswise, then filled them with the green mixture. They resembled savory pâte à choux buns, minus all the labor normally required.

Edamame and Artichoke Appetizers Recipe

I've just touched down in France! We landed a few hours ago and I'm ready to go to sleep, but before heading to my old childhood bedroom, I wanted to share with you a savory appetizer recipe that was inspired by a North African dessert called chebakia. I grew up in a suburb of Paris and I often enjoyed North African treats after school. This takes me back!

I used store-bought puff pastry and folded it in the same manner as the Moroccan sesame-spiced cookie (chebakia is folded in the shape of a flower, fried and drizzled with honey), then used an edamame and artichoke filling. It might look all fancy but it's very easy and delicious.

Lavash Bread 'Sushi' Pinwheel Recipe Recipe

If you’re intimidated by the thought of making sushi, this recipe is a great place to start. These sushi-syle pinwheelsl are much easier than the real thing, but still delicious. No nori sheets or rice are involved. Instead, I used soft flatbread, roasted red bell pepper hummus, crunchy shredded carrots, wasabi-flavored avocado, edamame beans and spinach leaves. They can be served as appetizers for a dinner party; to ensure they don't fall apart, secure them by tying cute bows around the "sushi" using garlic chives. Remember, you eat with your eyes first!

If you happened to stop by the Gilroy Garlic festival this weekend, you may have come across the California Lavash booth. I absolutely love their artisan flatbread and used it in this dish. Their new look has officially launched and it should be hitting Whole Foods shelves in a few weeks; I’m personally excited about that because you'll be able to see my photos on the new packages!

Mediterranean Pinwheel Sandwich Recipe Recipe

These colorful pinwheel sandwiches are loaded with Mediterranean flavors. Fresh and roasted vegetables are brought together with hummus and pleasingly tart capers. The cabbage and carrots were also briefly pickled in lemon juice and a little sugar to add a little brightness without sacrificing their crunch.

I made these pinwheel sandwiches a while back with the gals from California Lavash. I had a blast cooking with them and look forward to doing it again soon. Their pizza lavash is out of this world. These sandwiches are perfect for the summer and would look fabulous at any picnic, party or barbecue. Enjoy the sunshine!

Pasta Patty Appetizer Recipe

Making pasta patties is my way of using left-over pasta. I made a very simple pasta dish mixing pre-cooked elbow macaroni, ricotta cheese, Parmesan cheese and eggs. I wanted to create a nice contrast of texture, so I breaded the pasta patties using panko bread crumbs from Asian Food Grocer and gave them a quick pan fry.

I served the crunchy patties with tomato sauce and a light green salad. This is a great light meal for lunch, and can be put together very quickly if you have leftover cooked pasta on hand.
