Fresh Garden Salad served with Sesame Persian Cheese and Candied Walnuts Recipe

I received a request for this salad recipe that I served with a tatin de petits oignons perlés à l'Indienne a few days ago.

Although my husband is vegetarian, he is not a big fan of simple green lettuce. So I tried to dress it up with little helpers like a citrus relish, cheese and some nuts. The nuts are a great addition of protein for vegetarians.

Of course, the key to a good salad is the vinaigrette. I always try to make my own because the store-bought ones contain preservatives and gum to make the texture more dense, instead of using mustard.

Sunken Fried Tofu Recipe

Sunken Fried Tofu

03.05.09 by Jackie

A few months ago, I came across this article from MSNBC entitled "Pass the tofu: 1 in 200 kids is vegetarian". I was amused because there are 4 kids in our household and three of them are vegetarian. So when the article underlines the fact that adolescent vegetarianism seems to be rising, I totally agree. I don't have kids yet but I hope they will be open to a wide variety of foods while eating meat in moderation, unless my vegetarian husband and my father-in-law try to influence them!

Anyway, many studies have concluded that a diet high in red meat increases the risk of various cancers when compared to a vegetarian diet. As a meat eater, I'm always more reluctant to try vegetarian food even though, I keep having to come up with more varied vegetarian meals for the non-carnivores in my house. So here is a recipe that both meat-lovers and vegetarians will love for its texture and flavor. Try it out and remember, there are health benefits for you to consume less meat overall in your diet. How about starting with one veggie meal a week?

Indian-Style Pearl Onion Confit Upside-Down Tart (Tarte Tatin de Petits Oignons Perles a l'Indienne) Recipe

The tarte tatin (upside-down tart) was originally made with caramelized apples. It was created by the Tatin sisters at the beginning of the century. The two demoiselles Tatin, Fanny and Caroline, ran a little eatary in a hotel in Sologne, in the countryside of France near Orleans. They were famous for their apple tarts. One day, one of the sisters clumsily forgot to place the puff pastry dough and put the caramelized apple layer first and that's how a fortunate mistake created the trendy dish.

A French way to make an onion confit would be with caramelized onions that were previously boiled in milk but I had some leftover curried pearl onions called do-pyaaza. It's cooked in a generous amount of ghee, yogurt and flavored with ginger-garlic paste and several Indian spices. My fusion result is called a tarte tatin de petits oignons perlés à  l'Indienne.

Vegetarian Broccoli Risotto Recipe

Vegetarian Broccoli Risotto

03.03.09 by Jackie

I've already made several versions of risotto like the Asian Fusion Bamboo one or the more traditional cremini mushroom risotto. Today was a very cold and rainy day, so I decided to make another risotto. This version is risotto with broccoli, Lulu's favorite.  Broccoli pairs great with cheddar cheese, and is a great flavor and color accent to the risotto.  It's slightly upscale comfort food that your family will love.

Easy Olive and Cheese Pizza Recipe

Easy Olive and Cheese Pizza

02.25.09 by Jackie

The hard part of making pizza at home is preparing the dough, but with this recipe, you'll be making pizza all the time.  The toppings for this pizza are olives, tomatoes and basil, but you can use whatever you like.  That combination is popular at my home because my father is allergic to mushrooms. He can't eat the Mango Mushroom Pizza that I always prepare for our "pizza nights".  The little one is obsessed with olives, so this one is her favorite as well.
