Red Cabbage and Bean Sprout Salad Recipe Recipe

I had leftover bean sprouts from a large pot of phở over the weekend, and I decided to make a salad with it. The color of the bean sprouts needed a little oomph, so I added shredded red cabbage. In addition to the red cabbage, I also used diced Fuji apples.

Given the Asian flair of the salad, I made a peanut, lime and condensed milk vinaigrette. This is a very quick and easy first course, which gave me some time to work on a delicious dessert to satisfy my husband's sweet tooth for Valentine’s Day.

Duck Magret Salad Recipe Recipe

Duck Magret Salad Recipe

02.07.11 by Jackie

Duck prosciutto (thin cuts of smoked duck breast) is one of my favorite cured meats. It makes the most ordinary of salads extraordinary. The combination of saltiness and flavor from the high fat content is irresistible. When I prepared this dish in Paris, for every slice of duck that went into the salad, one went into my mouth as well. I found a supplier on Amazon and I'm going to try them out because I cannot wait until my next trip to France to satisfy my duck prosciutto craving. This would make a perfect first course for a romantic Valentine's Day dinner.

Dieters, avert your gaze! What started as a few innocent pieces of duck prosciutto turned into full-scale gorging of foie gras, oysters, veal and other French delicacies that left me 10 pounds heavier than I was when I arrived. You could say that duck prosciutto was my "gateway" meat .

Grilled Artichoke and Endive Salad Recipe Recipe

Grilled artichoke and endive salad is one of the dishes I concocted in the tiny kitchen of the Parisian apartment we rented. Don't get me wrong, we loved the place where we stayed at. It's just that the kitchen had the bare minimum: a sink and a toaster-sized oven topped with 2 burners. First I steamed leeks, then grilled a red bell pepper, the endives and artichokes and coated pieces of Rocamadour cheese in herbs. The mixture makes a colorful, tasty first course.

I'm a little slow at sharing the recipes from our recent trip to Europe. It takes some time to process all the photos, so I promise they should be ready after the celebration of the Chinese New Year. Stay tuned!

In case you're wondering who the man in the collage is, he's one of the many vendors who operate stalls at the Daumesnil open air market on Tuesdays and Fridays. I was snapping photos as I meandered through the market and he begged me to take one of him. The merchants in Paris tend to have a lot of personality (they sing, they scream, they rhyme; whatever it takes to get people's attention) and they do their best to entice you to buy their food. He was quite a ham and was absolutely thrilled when I told him I'd post his picture on the site.

Rocket Salad with Granny Smith Apples (Mixed Green Salad Recipe) Recipe

My husband Lulu and I are finally back home from a long month in Paris. It's good to be home and see the girls again, whom we missed a lot. Lulu got the camera out and showed the family pictures of the wonderful Parisian monuments and delicious food we had.

Over the next few days, I'll be sharing with you the dishes I made on our trip. This particular one is a very simple roquette (also known as rocket or arugula) and apple salad. I paired it with freshly cracked walnuts and pecorino pepper vinaigrette. The crunch and the hint of tart and slight acidity from Granny Smith apples works wonders on this salad. Bon appétit!

Blue Cheese Pear Salad Recipe Recipe

Blue Cheese Pear Salad Recipe

12.15.10 by Jackie

When pears still have a hard texture, they are a wonderfully sweet addition to salad. I wanted to make a first course that looks festive for the holidays, so I mixed some greens, hazelnuts, dried cranberries, pears and blue cheese. What's not to like? To finish, I drizzled creamy blue cheese dressing on the salad.

This is definitely not a salad for dieting! It's the holidays though, so indulge.
