Crispy Potato Flower Recipe Recipe

Crispy Potato Flower Recipe

The preparation of this visually striking potato dish is fairly easy if you own a mandoline. Very-thinly-sliced potatoes are parboiled, then brushed with a butter and oil mixture. The slices are then stacked in individual ramekins to mimic flower petals.

It’s an elegant and innovative way to have potatoes as a part of your Thanksgiving table. With my first cookbook on shelves very soon (it's due out on December 18th), I'm going to be posting a lot of potato dishes that didn't make into to the book. If you’re interested, you can pre-order it on Amazon or Barnes and Noble!

Brussels Sprout Pasta Recipe Recipe

Brussels Sprout Pasta Recipe

Now that the election is over, we can turn our sights to something that everyone can agree on: making delicious Thanksgiving food! But in food, as in politics, you can’t escape partisan ideology, and I find that people have a love or hate reaction to Brussels sprouts. That’s unfortunate, because even though green beans and collard greens are part of many people’s Thanksgiving tradition, I think that Brussels sprouts deserve consideration as well.

One way to get people to feel more comfortable with an ingredient they may not love is to dress it up with universally liked flavors. In this dish, I combined seared Brussels sprouts with garlic pesto pasta. The mild sweetness enhances and reinforces the garlicky goodness of the pesto. It’s familiar enough to make everyone at your dinner table smile. It also sneaks in some greens, which I think is really important on carb-heavy Thanksgiving.

I just voted and I'm so happy I got to participate in my first election as a US citizen! I can't wait to see when they announce the winner. As an aside, I've heard that people are instagraming their filled-out ballots. That's illegal, so don't do that! #GOVOTE

Fresh Tomato Soup Recipe Recipe

Fresh Tomato Soup Recipe

Our entire family has been following the elections very closely. Knowing that Ohio is a key state in the home stretch, I did some research and found out that tomato juice was its official beverage. It's not warm enough to make tomato juice, so I made a warm tomato soup, using the very last batch of tomatoes in our garden.

I blended the ripe tomatoes with roasted red bell pepper, fried yellow onions, garlic, cumin, clove, fresh basil and crème fraîche. The result was very soothing and, to my surprise, the soup turned out very sweet and not acidic at all.

Turmeric Tofu with Dill Recipe Recipe

Turmeric Tofu with Dill Recipe

11.05.12 by Jackie

This tofu dish is my attempt to make the equivalent of chả cá thăng long, which is pan-fried fish in dill, turmeric, galangal and sautéed onions. To mimic the fish, I pan-fried fresh tofu so that the outside has a crispy texture while the outside remains soft. The rest of the dish is similar to the original, but I also added baby asparagus spears for a little color.

The fish version is a bit more complicated because you have to prepare a marinade for the fish. So even if you’re not a vegetarian, consider this version when you’re in a hurry. Eat it with bun (vermicelli rice noodles) and you'll have a delicious, complete meal.
